LAFAYETTE
- Current Carolina Panthers quarterback and former
Louisiana-Lafayette great Jake Delhomme goes to
Hollywood this week to take part in the 12th annual ESPY
awards, presented by ESPN, with a chance at taking home
the first award of his career.
Delhomme was named one of five nominees for an ESPY Award in the "Best Breakthrough" category. The other nominees for "Best Breakthrough" are Freddy Adu, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Michelle Wie.
For the past three weeks Cajun and Panther fans across the nation have had a chance to log on the World Wide Web and cast their vote for Jake. Now, they have an opportunity to see if one of Acadiana's finest will pick up the hardware.
The
ESPY Awards will be handed out July 14 in Hollywood,
Calif., at the Kodak Theatre. Jamie Foxx will host the
12th Annual event. The show will be broadcast Sunday,
July 18 at 8:00 p.m. (CT) on ESPN.
Delhomme was nominated for his role in directing the Panthers to a division title and Super Bowl berth in his first season as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
After spending four seasons as a back-up with the New Orleans Saints, he started virtually every game for Carolina during the 2003 season, leading them to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
