Injuries End Cajuns Winning Streak

CORPUS CHRISTI-Texas-Injuries proved very costly for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team in two losses at the HEB Classic here Saturday.

The Cajuns are now 6-4 on the season and 1-2 at the HEB Classic.

In the first match, UL Lafayette managed to win only one singles and doubles match. In singles, Marc Castellana defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shahzeb Niazi 6-3, 6-4. Castellana is now 7-2 on the year.

No. 71-ranked Jakub Ilowski's match with No. 57 Christophe Bergues of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was not finished after TAMUCC had clinched the victory. Ilowski won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second set 4-6.

In doubles, the Cajuns freshman combo of Amanjot Singh and Evghenii Corduneanu won 8-2.

“We are banged up because of injuries, but we fought extra hard today,” said UL Lafayette head coach Justin McGrath. “You have to give [Texas A&M] Corpus Christi a lot of credit. They played really well and with a lot of spirit.”

In the second match of the day, UT Arlington avenged an earlier loss to the Cajuns with a 4-0 victory. The Cajuns were unable to win a match in the second half of Saturday's action.

Junior Michael Tarkowski dropped his second match of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Nathan McGregor. Tarkowski has been hampered with a nagging shoulder injury.

Amanjot Singh and Jakub Ilowski did not finish their singles matches after Texas-Arlington had already won the match. Both Cajuns did not finish their matches against TAMUCC either.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team will face Alabama-Birmingham here at the HEB Classic Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
