Tarkowski Makes Senior Debut, Helps Cajuns to 6-1 Victory

LAFAYETTE-Senior Michael Tarkowski made his long-awaited spring debut, as the No. 53-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team defeated Troy State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Cajun Courts.

The win improves Louisiana-Lafayette to 8-7, while the loss drops Troy State to 7-11 overall.

"Today was a total team effort," said UL Lafayette head coach Justin McGrath. "I thought, as a team, it was the best we've played all year."

In doubles, Evghenii Corduneanu and Amanjot Singh defeated Robert Van Swelm and Irving Morales at the No. 1 spot 8-5. In the No. 2 position, Ivan Kovalev and Robin Ley defeated Emir Basic and Chris Harfield 8-4, while Tarkowski and Shaun Ellison defeated Clayton Langheim and Charles Van Swelm 8-3.

In singles, No. 87-ranked Corduneanu needed three sets to knock off Morales 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Singh defeated Basic at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-2. Ley defeated Harfield 7-5, 6-2.

Ellison and Kovalev both record singles victories at the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

Charles Van Swelm clinch the only singles point for the Trojans, defeating Tarkowski 7-6, 6-3.

"We had one guy out of our lineup (Castellana). We had another one (Ley) battling the flu and he still won his match. I think says a lot about how mentally tough this team is."

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team returns to action Wednesday when they host Southeastern Louisiana in a 1 p.m. match at Cajun Courts.
