The Cajuns (25-2) have not played since posting a 2-1 win over St. John's Sunday, March 7 at the Florida State Seminole Challenge. The victory sewed up the team's fifth tournament championship of the season and extended the current win streak to five games.
The rest couldn't have come at a better time for Louisiana-Lafayette which had played a total of 27 games in the season's first five weeks.
Tuesday's games mark the beginning of a busy week for the Cajuns. Following the TSU twinbill, UL Lafayette will travel to Fullerton, Calif., on Wednesday, March 17 for the KIA Klassic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. There the Cajuns will face DePaul, Cal State Fullerton and the U.S. Olympic Team in pool play.
Louisiana-Lafayette will put its 33-game home win streak on the line against the Bobcats (22-8) who enter the contest on a three-game win streak and are off to a 9-0 start in Southland Conference play. The Cajuns are 84-8 (.913) at Ragin' Cajuns Park under head coach Stefni Lotief.
The twinbill figures to be a pitcher's duel between UL Lafayette's Brooke Mitchell (19-1, 244 K, 30 2/3 IP) and TSU's Nichole Neuerburg (15-3, 154 K, 129 IP) – two pitchers worthy of All-American status.
Mitchell enters the doubleheader having won her last 18 straight decisions. The Pasadena, Texas, native is just 35 strikeouts shy of tying the single-season record she set last season.
Lotief enters the twinbill just two wins shy of her 175th career victory. She brings a 173-36 career record (.828 win percentage) into Tuesday's games.
Following Tuesday's game the Cajuns next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 against Nicholls State in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
