Saturday, March 13, 2004
LAFAYETTE - Ragin' Cajuns senior track standout Lawrence Willis capped an impressive indoor season with a fourth place finish in the triple jump finals to earn his first Indoor All-America honor and second of his career at the NCAA Championships held from the Randal Tyson Indoor Track in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Willis
set a new career best in the event with a distance of
54-04.00 in his first of six attempts. The jump ranks as
the fourth longest in Cajun history and tops his
previous best mark of 54-02.00.
He first earned All-America honors in 2003 when he placed fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a triple jump mark of 53-10.25.
The Iota, La., native qualified for the Championships with three automatic marks in the triple jump, most recently a mark of 53-05.75 to win his third consecutive Sun Belt triple jump title two weeks ago.
The Cajun senior was also named the 2004 Sun Belt Championship men's most outstanding field performer and top points earner after winning both the triple and long jump titles.
