LAFAYETTE – Raeni Landry went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth inning that proved to be the winning run as Southeastern Louisiana gained a measure of revenge with a 3-2 win over Texas Tech in game 14 of the 1st Annual Louisiana's Mardi Gras Classics.
With the win, the Lions (6-10) avenged an 8-0 mercy-rule loss to Texas Tech on Friday and wrapped up at least a share for second place in the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Texas Tech (4-13) dropped its fourth straight and finished the tournament in sixth place with a 1-4 record. The Lady Raiders lost the tiebreaker with Prairie View by virtue PV's 7-5 win over on Saturday.
Mississippi State transfer Summer Delaneuville (4-3) wrapped up a solid weekend in the circle for the Lady Lions as she tossed a complete game allowing just two runs off of four hits while striking out five.
Delaneuville finished the Mardi Gras Classics with a 0.73 ERA over four appearances and 28 2/3 innings. She struck out 24 batters and gave up just three runs.
Delaneuville and Texas Tech starter Erin Crawford were locked into a pitchers duel through the first three innings.
Crawford had to wiggle her way out of trouble in the top of the first. SLU loaded the bases with two outs, but Crawford induced a grounder from Kelli Gautreau to end the threat.
The Lady Raiders were retired in order in the first two innings. A single to center field by Heather Parker broke up the no-hit bid and gave TTU its first of four hits in the game.
SLU broke loose in the top half of the fourth with two runs off of four hits.
Starr Newcomb led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Lemons.
Lisa Chapman singled up the middle to advance pinch runner Katie Szmergalski over to third base. Szmergalski scored when Sarah Gascon hit a grounder to second.
The Lady Lions final run of the inning came two batters later when Karin Smith brought home Chapman with an RBI single.
Landry's sacrifice fly highlighted the sixth for SLU and proved to be a significant as TTU scrapped for two runs on a RBI double by Elyssa Sigala in the bottom of the sixth.
Delaneuville would strike out three Lady Raiders in the bottom of the seventh to secure the SLU its third win of the weekend. She was credited with all three Lady Lions' wins.
Crawford took the loss for TTU as she gave up two runs off of seven hits in four innings. Keely Tucker kept the Lions at bay over her three innings of relief surrendering just one run and three hits.
