LAFAYETTE – Prairie View A&M picked up its first win of the season picking up a 7-5 upset victory over Texas Tech in game eight of the 1st Annual Louisiana's Mardi Gras Classic here Saturday afternoon at Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.

The Panthers pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning breaking a 2-2 tie en route to the victory.

Kimberly Hayden was a perfect 3-for-3 to lead the Panthers while Rosaline Ash drove in a team-high three runs.

Texas Tech committed three errors, after having just one in two previous tournament games, none more costly than two errors in the four-run fifth for PV.

Trailing 2-0, the Panthers struck for two runs in the third inning to tie the game 2-2.

With one out, Meghan Taylor was hit by pitch. Hayden then singled into left field and would move over to second on the throw from the outfield.

Ash then followed with a single directly up the middle of the infield that scored Taylor and Hayden.

After neither team was able to conjure up any offense in the fourth inning, Prairie View struck gold in the bottom half of the fifth off of Texas Tech reliever Keely Tucker.

Tucker gave up three straight singles and Prairie View crossed the plate with the go-ahead run.

After an RBI single from Ash made it 3-2 with still no outs, the Panthers would reload the bases as Kimberly Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice.

Christina Reyes grounded to shortstop and reached base on a throwing error by Heather Parker. Hayden scored to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

The wheels continued to fall off for Tucker and the Lady Raiders as she issued a bases loaded walk to Angel Price to make it 5-2.

Then on the next play, a grounder was hit to short and Heather Parker went for the force at second base, but the throw was to the left of the target allowing Fernandez to score and give TTU a 6-2 advantage.

Fernandez's run proved to be the game-winner as Texas Tech struck for three more runs in the final two innings of the game.

Jaime Cain picked up the win for the Panthers allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Tucker suffered the loss in relief for PV. She gave up five runs off of five hits in two innings of relief. TTU starter Kassandra Planck pitched four innings allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out four.

Prairie View moved to 1-3 in tournament play and wraps up its stay Sunday in a 10 a.m. game against Missouri (2-10).

Texas Tech dropped its second straight game in tournament play. The Lady Raiders return to action later this evening as they face Stephen F. Austin at 8:15 p.m.
