Statistical Recap

LAFAYETTE -
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns dropped a 13-10 decision to Troy University on Saturday afternoon at Cajun Field. The win improves Troy to 6-4 (4-2), while the Cajuns fall to 4-6 (2-4).

The crowd of 15,077 gives the Cajuns a five-game total of 107,006 for an average of 21,401. The Cajuns see 100,000 fans for the first time since 1996, and 2004's average is the eighth best in the 34 years of football at Cajun Field.

The Cajuns missed crucial scoring opportunities, moving inside the Troy 10 yard-line three times, but scoring only 10 points.

Louisiana's biggest error came on the game's opening drive.

The Cajuns opened the game by moving 60 yards on four plays to the Troy five yard-line. Jerry Babb started the game with a five-yard pass to Kemmie Lewis that Lewis turned into a 47-yard gain. Three rushes by Josh Harrison preceded an interception by Johnny Faulk in the endzone. Babb's arm was hit as he attempted to pass, resulting in the ball going directly to Faulk.

A diving tackle by Wes Simon on fourth-and-one gave the Cajuns the ball back after Troy had moved to the Cajuns 34 yard-line.

The Cajuns gave the ball back to Troy in excellent position after the Cajuns were unsuccessful on fourth-and-one from their 43 yard-line. The Trojans moved 20 yards in nine plays before Greg Whibbs converted a 40-yard field goal into the wind.

The Trojans upped their lead to 10-0 late in the first half. A nine-play, 84-yard drive ended in a nine-yard touchdown run by Sean Dawkins. The key play of the drive came after Troy decided to go for it on fourth-and-four from the Cajuns 22 yard-line. The ensuing snap went over the head of quarterback D.T. McDowell, but McDowell grabbed the ball, retreated back to midfield and then rushed around the left side 37 yards for a net gain of nine yards and a first down.

The Cajuns moved into Trojan territory in the final seconds of the second quarter, but a holding penalty pushed Louisiana out of field goal range.

Troy used 5:35 of the third quarter during their first drive of the second half, tacking on another three points via a 24-yard field goal from Whibbs.

The Cajuns found the scoreboard following Troy's first turnover of the game. C.C. Brown forced a Jermaine Richardson fumble that was recovered by Jarrett Jones at the TU 40 yard-line.

Babb directed a nine-play drive, finishing it himself on a one-yard touchdown plunge. He ran three times on the drive for 12 yards, adding a 16-yard completion to Ray Givens on third-and-11.

Louisiana chipped away at the Troy lead on their next possession. The Cajuns drove 81 yards down to the TU 10 yard-line, taking a 27-yard field goal by Sean Comiskey to trim the deficit to three, 13-10, with 9:27 to play.

The Cajuns defense played strong in the final quarter, giving the offense the ball three times in the final 6:23. The offense, however, turned the ball over twice and punted in the three possessions.
