Cajuns Fall to La. Tech In Home Opener

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns struggled on offense and committed several costly penalties on defense in falling to Louisiana Tech on Saturday night by a final score of 34-3.

Saturday's attendance of 24,211 is one of the 20 best in the history of Cajun Field.

UL Lafayette could never muster a prolonged drive, as penalties and turnovers continually hurt the team. The Cajuns committed three turnovers and were flagged for 10 penalties.

Tech's second drive of the game consumed 65 yards on eight plays, helped by two Cajuns pass interference penalties. The Cajuns second penalty gave LT a first-and-goal at the UL Lafayette nine-yard line. Tech couldn't find the end zone and had to settle for a Josh Scobee 24-yard field goal.

Following a Chester Johnson fumble, his third in two games, Tech scored a touchdown on a nice 35-yard run by Ralph Davis. Davis broke six tackles en route to the end zone, giving LT a 10-0 lead.

The Cajuns got on the board with the first play of the second quarter. Sean Comiskey capped an eleven-play 76-yard drive with a 22-yard field goal. The drive consumed 3:49 and was highlighted by a 33-yard pass from Jerry Babb to Fred Stamps.

Tech added to their lead with another field goal. Scobee was accurate from 26 yards, increasing the visitor's lead to 13-3, with 11 minutes still remaining in the first half. .

The Bulldogs lead continued to grow. Luke McCown hit Tramissian Davis on a 31-yard strike before Ralph Davis ran for 19-yards down to the Cajuns 3-yard line. Ralph Davis punched it in from one-yard to give the Bulldogs a 20-3 lead.

McCown hit Chris Norwood on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 left in the first half. LT led 27-3 at the break.

McCown accounted for the only score of the second half. He hit D.J. Curry on a four-yard touchdown pass with 11:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. Tech held the ball for 12:53 of the fourth quarter, allowing the Cajuns just one possession.
