Smothers & Lamy tabbed Sun Belt Players of the Week

LAFAYETTE - Louisiana-Lafayette running back Travis Smothers and whip safety Patrick Lamy were named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for their efforts this past Saturday at South Carolina.

Smothers made an impressive I-A college football debut. With brother Warrick Dunn in attendance, Smothers notched 113 yards on 19 carries. He became the first Cajun to top 100 yards rushing in a game since Jerome Coleman rumbled for 159 yards at Idaho on Oct. 20, 2001, a span of 16 games without a 100-yard performance.

With three seconds remaining in the first half, the Cajuns Michael Adams blocked Josh Brown's 29-yard field goal attempt. Lamy scooped-up the ball and raced the length of the field untouched for a touchdown which tied the game at 7-7.

Lamy's 89-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown is the longest defensive touchdown return for the Cajuns since Ron Irvin returned an interception 90 yards at Arkansas State on Nov. 5, 1977. In fact, there are only two returns in school history longer than Lamy's, Irvin's 90-yard jaunt and Luther Perrin's 105-yard interception return vs. Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 9, 1934.

The blocked field goal return for a touchdown is the first in Sun Belt Conference history.

The individual Sun Belt weekly honors are the eighth and ninth for Louisiana-Lafayette. It also marks the second time that the Cajuns have captured two individual awards in one week. Eric Rekeita and Sean Comiskey were named offensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, on Nov. 11, 2002. No Cajun has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week more than once.

The Cajuns are still in search of their first Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week winner.
