Cornhuskers End Cajun Win Streak at Seven Games

LINCOLN, Neb. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team ends a seven game winning streak with a 6-2 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers here at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The Cornhuskers even the series at one game each heading into Sunday's series finale. UL Lafayette (22-26) falls to 8-12 on the road, while Nebraska (36-12) improves to 21-2 at Hawks Field in 2003.
Junior right-hander Jordy Templet made start for UL Lafayette against Nebraska right-hander Quinton Robertson. Robertson won the pitching match-up by allowing just two Cajun runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched.
Nebraska got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning. Cornhusker catcher Matt Wells continued his hot hitting against the Cajuns with a two-run homerun to give Nebraska a 2-0 lead.
The Cornhuskers added another run in the fourth inning after left fielder Curtis Ledbetter doubled to open the inning and scored on a RBI single by third baseman Alex Gordon.
UL Lafayette cut the Nebraska lead to just one run at 3-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Cajun shortstop Ray Dees hit a two-out single to center field that scored right fielder Kevin Preau from second for the first Cajun run of the game in the fifth inning.
Nebraska responded with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Templet left the game after giving up a one-out homerun to Cornhusker left fielder Curtis Ledbetter. Nebraska added one more run off Cajun reliever Thad Montgomery on a RBI single by second baseman Jake Millinax to take a three run lead after six innings.
Nebraska added one more run in the eighth inning after Alex Gordon led off with a single and later scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 6-2.
Cornhusker relievers Jeremy Becker and Jason Burch combined to hold the Cajuns scoreless for the final two innings. Burch picked up his fifth save of the year for Nebraska.
Robertson (7-1) picked up the win for Nebraska, while Templet (6-4) suffers the loss for UL Lafayette after allowing four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched with six strikeouts and three walks.
Designated hitter Bryan Sneed led the Cajuns offensively after going 3 for 3 with a run scored. He was the only Cajun batter with multiple hits on the day and became the Cajuns all-time leader in hit-by-pitches with 31 after getting hit by a Robertson pitch to lead off the second inning.
Alex Gordon led Nebraska with three hits on the day and three runs scored. Matt Wells and Curtis Ledbetter both added homeruns for the Cornhuskers.
UL Lafayette falls to 22-26 overall on the season with the loss, but has a chance to win the series tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the rubber match of the three game series. Junior Austin Faught (4-3, 4.32 ERA) will get the start for Louisiana-Lafayette against Phil Shirek (4-0, 2.27 ERA) for Nebraska.
