HAMMOND, La. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team defeats the Southeastern Louisiana Lions by a score of 8-1 here at Alumni Field. The Cajuns win both meetings against the in-state rivals on the year. UL Lafayette (21-25) has now won six straight games with the win, while Southeastern falls to 14-28 on the year.

UL Lafayette senior left-hander Andy Gros becomes the schools all-time appearances leader on the mound with his 81st career appearance, passing former Cajun pitcher Mike Gautreau. Gros made the record appearance one to remember as he struck out 10 SLU hitters and held the Lions scoreless on just four hits in six innings of work. It was the first appearence for Gros since he pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief on April 13th against Arkansas-Little Rock.

The Cajuns used a pair of three run innings in the third and sixth innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead against the Lions. Left fielder Corey Coles drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly and Bryan Sneed drove in two more with his fourth homerun of the year with two outs in the third inning. Second Baseman Brad Saloom hit a two-run double in the sixth inning and scored from third on a wild pitch to give UL Lafayette a six run lead.

UL Lafayette added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend the lead to 8-0. Catcher Ryan Core picked up the RBI in the seventh with a single down the right field line that scored Sport Voorhies and Jason Wilson added the other RBI in the eighth on a double that scored Ray Dees with the eighth Cajun run of the game.

Gros shut down the Lion bats for the first six innings and the Cajun relief duo of Thad Montgomery and Jeff Martinez held SLU scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings.

Southeastern Louisiana added one run in the ninth inning against Cajun reliever Dan Reed to avoid the shutout. SLU catcher Lenny Mayard picked up the RBI on a double down the left field line that scored Matt McCullough from second for the lone Lion run of the night.

Gros (3-6) picks up his third win of the season for UL Lafayette, while SLU starter Brad Pitarro (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on nine Cajun hits in five innings pitched.

UL Lafayette recorded 12 hits on the night led by a 3 for 4 night by Ryan Core, who scored a run and drove in another and Bryan Sneed's 2-run homerun in third inning.

UL Lafayette improves to 21-25 overall on the season and have now won four straight on the road as they continue a seven game road trip with a weekend series in Lincoln, Neb. against the #4 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers starting this Friday night at 6:35 pm from Haymarket Field.
