Sweep: McMurtry and Parrott take Sun Belt Weekly Honors
Thursday, March 6, 2003
LAFAYETTE – After turning in outstanding performances at last weekend's 17th Annual Louisiana Classics softball tournament at Lady Cajun Park, Louisiana's Ragin'Cajuns softball teammates Becky McMurtry and Michael Parrott were honored as the Sun Belt Conference's Hitter and Pitcher of the Week respectively as released by the conference office Wednesday, March 5.
McMurtry
was also named the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association
Hitter of the Week.
McMurtry, a 2002 All-American at third base for the Cajuns, hit four home runs, two doubles and drove in six runs in UL Lafayette's championship-performance at the Louisiana Classics.
The North Platte, Neb., native ended the weekend 6-for-15 (.400 batting average) and led the tournament field in home runs and runs batted in. For her efforts she was named the Louisiana Classics Most Outstanding Player.
Parrott, a senior transfer from North Carolina in 2002, moved her season record to 4-0 with three wins over the weekend. She tossed two shutouts of McNeese State and earned the win in relief against Northwestern State Saturday afternoon.
Parrott
tossed 14 2/3 innings of scoreless softball while
allowing only seven hits and walking just two batters.
She did not allow an a run or earned run in three
appearances and pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief Saturday
versus Northwestern State, allowing just three hits
while working her way out of two bases loaded jams to
lead the Cajuns to the victory after the Demons had tied
the game 2-2 in the fourth inning.
The Houston native continued her streak of consecutive innings without an earned run allowed to 24 1/3 innings and has allowed just 15 hits throughout the young season.
McMurtry earned her third SBC Hitter of the Week Award of her career while Parrott was named SBC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career. McMurtry was named SBC Hitter of the Week March 25 and April 29 last season.
The SBC awards are the third and fourth this season for head coach Stefni Lotief's program. Brooke Mitchell was named the SBC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 18 and 25. This is UL Lafayette's first SBC Hitter of the Week honoree.
The Cajuns (10-2) will return to action on Sunday, March 9 in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Southern Mississippi at Lady Cajun Park. That will be followed by a doubleheader with Boston University Monday, March 10 at 3 p.m. before a trip to Fullerton, Calif., for the 2003 Kia Klassic March 13-16.
