Seven Cajuns Receive All-Louisiana Classics Honors

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team placed seven members on the 17th Annual Louisiana Classics All-Tournament team with All-American third baseman Becky McMurtry garnering the honors of the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

UL Lafayette honorees included designated player Lauren Castle, right fielder Danyele Gomez, center fielder Tiffany Grayson, first baseman Summar Lapeyrouse, pitcher Michael Parrott and shortstop Jill Robertson to go along with McMurtry's selection.

Notre Dame was second with four players on the All-Tournament team: shortstop Andria Bledsoe, right fielder Nicole deFau, left fielder Liz Hartmann and third baseman Andrea Loman.

Northwestern State had two representatives with left fielder Sarina Noack and second baseman Nicole Martin being selected onto the team.

The All-Louisiana Classics team was voted on by members of the media and a panel of tournament administrators from the event which was hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette athletics department and softball program.

McMurtry hit .400 in Louisiana-Lafayette's five games in the tournament, belting four home runs and collecting two doubles while driving in nine runs. All six of her hits in the weekend event were extra baggers. McMurtry's slugging percentage was a robust 1.333 while her on-base percentage was .591. She entered the weekend tournament having ont hit a home run in the team's previous seven games.

McMurtry led the entire Louisiana Classics field with four home runs and nine runs batted in. She was also tops with 20 total bases and was a close second with six runs scored.

Lapeyrouse completed the tournament with a .429 batting average. The Lafayette native had three doubles, one home run and three RBI. She had two RBI in the Cajuns 5-3 win over Notre Dame Saturday. Her three doubles were tied for the tournament lead.

Parrott tossed 14 2/3 innings of seven-hit ball while collecting three of the Cajuns four wins in the tournament. She allowed no extra base hits and worked her way out of two bases loaded jams against Northwestern State Saturday. Against NSU, Parrott picked up the win in relief of Brooke Mitchell as she tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits as the Cajuns held on for the 3-2 win.

Robertson homered three times while Castle and Grayson each belted two home runs.

For Notre Dame, Loman ended the weekend with the tournament's best batting average among starters with a .500 clip. Loman had eight hits and drove in seven runs. She also had three doubles and one home run. Loman's seven RBI were second only to McMurtry's nine.

deFau was second in the tournament with a .455 batting average while collecting five base hits. Hartmann went yard three times including two home runs on Friday against UL Lafayette which single-handedly helped the Irish defeat the Cajuns. Hartmann's solo shot in the seventh tied the game at 5-5 and her three-run bomb in the bottom of the ninth that gave the Irish the win over the hosts.

Bledsoe was the other Irish player with three home runs and hit .429 in five games. She drove in four runs and was second in the event with 15 total bases.

For Northwestern State, Noack was the Demons top hitter with a .438 batting average. Noack's seven hits were the second-most of any batter in the tournament. Martin led NSU with two doubles.

The weekend event was not void of fireworks. A grand total of 27 home runs were hit between UL Lafayette, ND and NSU. The four teams combined for 26 doubles with the Cajuns leading the way with nine two-baggers.
