MCNEESE COMPLETES SWEEP OF NORTHWESTERN STATE Cowgirls take advantage of two-out error in second inning

LAFAYETTE – McNeese State made it two wins over Southland Conference-rival Northwestern State in two days here Saturday at the 17th Annual Louisiana Classics at Lady Cajun Park with a 3-1 win in the opening game of day two.

McNeese State (2-8) took advantage of a Northwestern State two-out error in the second inning. NSU left fielder Sarina Noack misplayed a ball in left field that allowed Jessica Denham and Meghan Novak to score and put the Cowgirls up 2-0.

Rikki Fontenot singled to right center with one out and was advanced to second on an infield single by Novak. The Demons appeared to be out of trouble in the inning when starting pitcher Loni Rasberry picked up a grounder by Denham and tossed to third to retire Fontenot. But, the Cowgirls pushed ahead the go-ahead runs when Mandi Slater lifted a towering shot to left field that Noack misplayed allowing the two runs to score.

Denham helped her efforts in the pitching circle, allowing just four NSU hits in seven innings and staving off the Demons only threat in the fourth.

The Demons (1-9) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an infield single to shortstop by Shay Hunt that scored Amanda Ortego.

Denham picked up the win for the Cowgirls on the mound, her first of the season and she bounced back from a 11-0 loss to host-UL Lafayette Friday night. NSU''s Rasberry fell to 0-3 on the season.

With the win, McNeese State moves to 2-1 in the Louisiana Classics. Northwestern State drops its second straight game in the tournament and falls to 1-2.

The Cowgirls will play Notre Dame at 4:15 p.m. while NSU will face host-UL Lafayette in the next game beginning at 2 p.m.
