Repeats as Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week
Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball sophomore pitcher Brooke Mitchell earned her second straight Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honor on Tuesday, as she was named the league's top pitcher in a release from the conference office.
The
Pasadena, Texas, native collected both wins in the
circle for the Ragin' Cajuns (6-1) last Wednesday at
Nicholls State striking out 24 batters in 11 1/3 innings
of work during the twin bill sweep.
She tied her career high for strikeouts in game one at NSU, fanning 15 Colonel batters while allowing just just one hit in seven innings. Last season, Mitchell struck out 15 against Long Island on March 4
In game two at NSU, the sophomore sensation came in relief of starter Michael Parrott and pitched the final 4 1/3 innings of the game to collect the win. The right-hander retired nine NSU batters on strikes and gave up no hits.
Mitchell is 4-1 on the season and sports a 0.25 ERA. In 28 1/3 innings of work this young season she has struck out 49 batters and walked just eight. Opponents are hitting a paltry .108 against her.
With her 11th strikeout of game one at Nicholls on Wednesday she picked up the 200th strikeout of her brief career and currently has 213.
With this week's honor Mitchell joins former Cajuns teammate Melissa Coronado as the only two pitchers in SBC softball history to win the Pitcher of the Week award in consecutive weeks. Coronado earned the honor on March 19 and 26 in the 2001 season.
The award is her second of the week. On Monday, Mitchell was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week.
Louisiana-Lafayette will be back in action this weekend at Lady Cajun Park as the Cajuns host the 17th Annual Louisiana Classics Friday-Sunday, Feb. 28-March 2. The tournament field consists of No. 23 Notre Dame, McNeese State and Northwestern State. UL Lafayette opens tournament play at 4:15 p.m. Friday against McNeese and will face Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. that same evening.
