Lose Heartbreaker to No. 38 Southern Methodist
DALLAS, Texas-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team's attempt at defeating a nationally-ranked opponent fell short in a 4-3 loss to No. 38 Southern Methodist here Saturday at Haggar Tennis Stadium.
UL Lafayette's Jakub Ilowski improved to 3-1 on the season with his second win over a nationally-ranked opponent. Ilowski defeated No. 61 Johan Brunstrom 7-6, 7-6. Cajuns junior Michael Tarkowski also improved to 3-1 on the season with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Henrik Soderberg.
In doubles, SMU's duo of Brunstrom and Soderberg, ranked No. 33 in the nation, defeated UL Lafayette's Ilowski and Ivan Kovalev 8-6. The Cajuns picked up the remaining two doubles matches. Tarkowski and Marc Castellana defeated the No. 23-ranked team of Eric Cohn Gwinyai Chingoka 8-5.
Louisiana-Lafayette's Amanjot Singh and Evghenii Corduneanu defeated Lukasz Senczyszyn and Peter Oredsson 8-4.
"We played hard today, but it was a heartbreaker," said UL Lafayette head coach Justin McGrath. "I am proud of Jakub and Michael for winning their matches."
"We are still a young team, but we are improving everyday."
Saturday morning's scheduled match between UL Lafayette's women's tennis team and North Texas at Cajun Courts was canceled due to rain. No make-up date has been announced.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team returns home Wednesday to host Southern University in a 1:30 p.m. dual match at Cajun Courts.
