LAFAYETTE – Arkansas State's Shawna Sparks gained possession of a loose ball just outside the box, split two UL Lafayette defenders and lofted a shot over Liza Preseault for the match-winning goal in the 85th minute as ASU scored a 3-2 victory over the host-Ragin' Cajuns here Friday night at Cajun Field in Sun Belt Conference women's soccer action.

Sparks' goal spoiled a comeback attempt by Louisiana-Lafayette and snapped the Indians (5-9, 1-4 Sun Belt) five-match losing streak. UL Lafayette (5-8-1, 1-2 Sun Belt) had rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit on goals by Tiffany Garber and Lauren Schwindt.

The loss was the Cajuns third straight at Cajun Field and extended their home winless streak to five matches. The win for ASU marked the first time that the visiting team collected a win in the series.

“I thought we got caught flat early on and didn't pick up our intensity until the second half,” said UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi. “The goals that they scored were ones that should have been preventable, but to go down two goals and to come back and tie the match showed a lot of character.”

ASU got on the board first at the 8:57 mark of the first half. The goal was a result of the Cajuns failure to clear the Indians corner kick from Emma Raikes-May.

The corner sailed in off target and Schwindt attempted to pass the ball out of the box but was intercepted by Hull who one-timed a shot over the out-stretched arms of Preseault and into the upper right corner of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

The Indians extended the lead on Hull's second goal of the match at 23:41. Preseault was advancing toward an oncoming shot from midfield but slipped and fell missing the ball. Hull then tip-toed around Preseault and shot the ball into a wide-open net for a 2-0 advantage.

Louisiana-Lafayette answered seven minutes later off of a corner kick from Garber. Garber's corner, from the right side, hooked into the net carrying in ASU starting goalie Adrienne Mann, who was able to get her hands on the ball, into the net. The officials ruled that Mann was not pushed into the goal but rather fell over the goal line as the ball hooked in giving Garber her fifth goal of the season.

The Cajuns erased a 2-1 halftime deficit quickly. Schwindt headed in a pass from Garber on the right wing to tie the match 2-2 at the 46:58 mark. Garber lofted a pass into the box and Schwindt came charging in to tap the ball past Mann for her third goal of the season.

The two teams would play scoreless for the next 39 minutes before Sparks' heroics ended the Cajuns chance of sending the match into overtime or possibly rallying for the win.

“We had our chances to win it in the second half,” Poggi said. “In these types of conference matches its difficult to come back and score three goals after falling behind by two, but when you have the opportunity to do that you have to take advantage of those opportunities because you won't get numerous chances.”

The Cajuns had an opportunity to pull ahead receiving shots on goal from Garber and Schwindt in the 72nd and 73rd minutes but ASU backup goalkeeper Jamie Reesby, subbing for Mann who went out with an injury, made the save each time.

Louisiana-Lafayette returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 19 in a 1 p.m. match against Arkansas-Little Rock.
