Sampson on watch list

CAJUNS SAMPSON ON OUTLAND TROPHY WATCH LIST

LAFAYETTE – The Football Writers Association of America announced on Friday a watch list of 63 interior lineman to be considered for the 2002 Outland Trophy.

??????????? On the list was Cajuns senior defensive tackle Walter Sampson.? The Crowley native enters his senior season with 13.5 career sacks and 23 tackles for loss.? Sampson needs just eight sacks to become the school's all-time career leader.? Eight tackles for loss would push Sampson into fifth place on the Cajuns all-time career list.

??????????? Even though he battled injuries most of the past two seasons, Sampson has still led the Cajuns in sacks, recording seven in 2000 and five last season.

??????????? “When Walter Sampson is healthy and at full speed, he has the ability to dominate the front line from tackle to tackle,” said Cajuns defensive line coach Carey Bailey.? “The injuries have set him back at times, but he comes in this fall at 100 percent, stronger than he has ever been.? I expect a lot of big things out of him.”
