CAJUNS FINISH SEASON AT SBC TOURNAMENT…April 24, 2002
NICEVILLE, Fla. -- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun golf team shot a final-round 301 Wednesday, finishing seventh at the 2002 Sun Belt Conference played at Bluewater Bay Resort.
Sophomore Brett Ashmore had his best career finish, as the Texan shot his second straight even-par 72 to claim a tie for eighth. Shawn Stoute, meanwhile, carded a 77 Wednesday to get a tie for 21st.
Freshman Marc Noel shot a 76 and tied for 23rd, while Orn Hjartarson (final round 77) and Theo Sliman (76) each tied for 34th. All was not lost for Hjartarson, though. The Iceland senior was named to the SBC All-Conference team for the third time in his solid career.
South Alabama notched the team championship with a final-round 295 -- the second-best team score of the day. New Mexico State linkster Jon Babich won individual honors -- firing a 73 Wednesday to finish at 3-under par overall. He was the only player to shoot under par for the three-day event.
The Cajuns, who ended their season, were trying for its third Sun Belt Conference Tournament title.
