CAJUNS SHOOT BETTER AT SBC CHAMPIONSHIPS…April 23, 2002
NICEVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Louisiana at Lafayette golf team shot a team score of 296 in the second day of play in the Sun Belt Conference tournament held at the Bluewater Bay Resort.
The Cajuns 296 score was second only to South Alabama's 292 team score, which vaulted the Jaguars into the team lead. New Mexico State, the leader after the tournament's first day, shot a team score of 299, falling four strokes behind USA. Despite improving 13 strokes, the Cajuns remain in 8th place in the 10-team field and trail the Jaguars by 15 stokes.
NMSU's Jon Babich shot a 69, the lowest score in the tournament's first two days, and leads the individual race by five strokes over Billy Zihala from Arkansas-Little Rock. In fact, Babich is the only player with a two-day total below par.
The Cajuns are led by Brett Ashmore, who shot an even-par 72, and currently sits tied for 12th place at 4-over par. Ashmore, who has turned in the Cajuns low score each day, leads teammate Shawn Stoute by three strokes.
Two-time All-SBC performer Orn Hjartarson rebounded from an opening round 81 to shoot a 2-over par 74 on Tuesday. Hjartarson and Cajun teammate Marc Noel sit at 11 and 9-over par, respectively.
The final round of play is set for Wednesday morning.
