GOLF FINISHES EIGHTH AT ASU CLASSIC…April 16, 2002

JONESBORO, Ark. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns golf team wrapped up play at the 2002 Arkansas State Indian Classics at Ridge Point Country club in eighth place

Louisiana-Lafayette shot a final round of 310 as a team to drop one spot from Monday's seventh-place standing. The Cajuns finished their two-day stint on the 6,539-yard layout with a 910, which was 40-over par.

UL Lafayette had five players finish in the top 50.

Orn Hjartarson, who finished third at the Border Olympics last weekend, was the highest finisher for the Cajuns. Hjartarson shot a 77 for the day to finish the three rounds with a 227, 11-over par, good enough for 36th individually.

Teammates Marc Noel and Brett Ashmore were in a four-way tie for 38th. Both shot a 228, 12-over par. Noel struggled with an 80, after entering the day 23rd.

Theo Sliman shot a 74 for the second straight round to finish 42nd with a 229, 13-over par. Shawn Stoute (230, 14-over) closed out the Cajuns' five in the Top 50.

Tournament-host Arkansas State shot a 289 today to finish one stroke ahead of day one leader South Alabama for the team title. USA struggled today with a 297 to lose a seven-stroke lead over ASU.

Individually, USA's Gareth Maybin took the honors. Maybin shot an even-par 72 and finished one stroke ahead of ASU's Jason Jackson.

The Cajuns will next be in action Monday-Tuesday, April 22-23, at the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Championships in Niceville, Fla. at the Bluewater Bay Golf Club.
