GOLF IN SEVENTH AT ASU…April 15, 2002

JONESBORO, Ark. – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun golf team stands in seventh place after Monday action at the ASU Indian Classic at Ridge Point Country Club. Louisiana-Lafayette shot back-to-back team rounds of 297 to put the squad at 18-over par heading into final-round play.

The Cajuns were led by a newcomer, as freshman Marc Noel came back from a 4-over par 76 in the morning to shoot an even-par 72 in second-round action.

Noel, tied for 23rd individually, was followed by Brett Ashmore. Ashmore, who had a good tournament at the Louisiana Classics last month, shot a 72 in the morning before closing with a 77 to stand tied for 25th.

Orn Hjartarson, who finished third at the Border Olympics last weekend, had a tough day -- carding a 73 in the morning before a second-round 77. Shawn Stoute (76-74) and Theo Sliman (81-74) rounded out the Cajun day.

South Alabama tore up the relatively short 6,539-yard layout. The Jaguars stand 3-under par and were led by Gareth Maybin. Maybin is 6-under par after an opening round 68 was followed by a 2-under par 70. Tournament-host Arkansas State is in second at 4-over par. The Indians' Jason Jackson is one shot behind Maybin after rounds of 70 and 69.

The final round will get underway at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
