SMU TAKES 17TH LOUISIANA CLASSICS…March 12, 2002

LAFAYETTE – SMU shot a final round team score of 291, and standout Jerome Theunis birdied the final two holes to lift the Mustangs to both the team and individual championships Tuesday in final-round action of the 17th Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.

Theunis fired a final-round 73 and chipped in on the 18th hole to take his first collegiate individual title. Franklin Hatchett, who struggled Monday, came back with a 69, and the Mustangs got a 74 from Brock Mulder and a 75 from Nicholas Loar in winning their first team championship at the Classics.

The 864 team score (even par) was good enough for a nine-shot win over second-place Tulsa and Baylor. It was also the lowest three-day team score at the Classics since Florida shot 2-under par 862 in 1991. Baylor, meanwhile, had Tuesday's low team round, as the Bears tallied a 2-under par 286 despite tough, windy conditions at the 7,002-yard layout.

UTSA got fourth place in the team race after a 294 Tuesday put them at 875 (11-over par), and Texas A&M (878) claimed fifth.

In the individual chase, Theunis pulled off a one-shot victory over BU's Ryan Baca. Theunis, who was 3-over par on the day entering the 17th hole, birdied the par-3 and then chipped in from just off the fringe on the 440-yard 18th.

Louisiana-Lafayette, meanwhile, had problems on the back nine en route to a 309 team score. The Cajuns finished tied for 13th. Shawn Stoute was the low Cajun overall, finishing tied for 23rd after a final-round 78. Senior Orn Hjartarson led the Cajuns Tuesday with a 75 (tied for 29th individually), while Brett Ashmore (78, T 45th), Austin Williams (78, T 54th) and Theo Sliman (79, 78th) rounded out the day.
