GOLF FIFTH AT LOUISIANA CLASSICS…March 11, 2002
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun golf coach Bob Bass may have found the remedy: Host a tournament.
The Cajuns are set to have their best showing since the fall season opener after an 8-over par 584 team score Monday at Oakbourne Country Club. The effort put the tourney-host Cajuns in a tie for fifth, along with Tulsa and Kansas, and left them 11 shots back of first-day leader SMU.
Cajun junior Shawn Stoute led the way on the 7,002-yard Oakbourne Country Club. The Lafayette native followed a morning round 73 with a stellar 2-under par 70 in windy afternoon conditions. His 143 total is tied for seventh heading into Tuesday's final round. Texas Tech's Mark Hull is the individual leader, after rounds of 69 and 70 put him at 5-under 139.
Louisiana-Lafayette shot 291 (5-over par) in the morning and followed with a 7-over par 293 afternoon post. Joining Stoute with a good afternoon round was sophomore Brett Ashmore. Playing in the No. 5 slot in the lineup, the diminutive Texan managed to grind out an even-par 72 after a 75 morning effort. Theo Sliman, who shot an 84 in the morning, came back to shoot 75 while the Cajuns also got a 76 from Austin Williams -- who shot a 1-over 73 morning round.
Orn Hjartarson led the team with a 70 in the morning, but the difficult conditions got him in the afternoon -- as he carded a 77. With all of the struggles Bass has seen his team fight during the last few weeks, a top-five standing had him optimistic heading into final-round action.
"We have been working so hard to get out of this," said Bass, whose team has not finished better than 10th in three spring tournaments this year. "It is good to see them have a good, solid day. I was surprised at how low the numbers were. This is an extremely difficult golf course, and today just showed how talented this field is."
SMU has a three-shot lead over Texas Tech going into Tuesday. The Mustangs recorded a 6-under par 282 in the afternoon, led by Jerome Theunis' 70. Theunis also shot a 70 in the morning, which puts him second individually -- one shot behind Hull. Nicolas Loar fired a 69 in the afternoon, and SMU also got a 71 from Ryan Abbate and a 72 from Brock Mulder.
Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Oakbourne. The public is invited to attend.
