CAJUN GOLF 11TH AT RICE…Feb. 11, 2002

KATY, Texas – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun golf team got off to a promising start, but a tough afternoon left the team standing 11th out of 12 schools Monday at the Rice Intercollegiate.

Junior standout Theo Sliman stands is tied for seventh individually, though, and is only three shots out of the lead. The New Iberia native fired a 1-over par 73 in the afternoon at Meadowbrook Farms Golf Course, which came after a morning-round 74. He is 3-over par overall at the difficult layout, which did not allow one player to finish the day under par.

Louisiana-Lafayette stood fifth after the first 18 holes after shooting a four-man round of 302. But the Cajuns ballooned to a 311 in the afternoon. However, the team is only 13 shots out of the sixth place schools.

Senior Orn Hjartarson shot a respectable 74 in the morning but followed with a 79 afternoon tally. Fellow-Iceland native Otto Sigurdsson duplicated the scores, as the duo stands tied for 35th individually. Freshman Marc Noel shot an 80 in the morning and followed with an 82, while Shawn Stoute came back to shoot 80 in the afternoon after a disastrous 86 in the first round.

Tennessee is in first place in team action with a total score of 581, and the Vols have a 15-shot edge on second-place Missouri, Baylor and Kansas State. The four schools were the only ones to break 600.

Rounding out the 12-school field include Vanderbilt (600), UC Davis (601), Rice (601), Southwest Texas (602), North Texas (608), Air Force (611), the Cajuns and Mississippi State (620).

The final round will take place Tuesday morning.
