LADY CAJUNS CONTINUE WINNING WAYS AT KIA…March 16, 2001 FULLERTON, Calif. – Louisiana's Lady Cajun softball team got its offense Friday from a likely source. Pitching, however, was another story. Junior All-American candidate Alana Addison once again sparked the Lady Cajun sticks with a home run and four RBIs, and junior Micah Barbato did the damage on the mound as Louisiana-Lafayette took a 6-2 win over UNLV to wrap up pool play at the 2001 Kia Klassic. The win gave Louisiana-Lafayette (17-4) the top seed out of Pool B thanks to a tie-breaker advantage over No. 2 Arizona, which the Lady Cajuns shocked 4-3 Thursday. Louisiana-Lafayette finished pool play 2-1, with its only loss coming late Thursday to Cal State Northridge. The Lady Cajuns will meet tourney-host Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. Saturday to begin championship bracket action. Addison, who has 35 of the team's 99 RBIs, broke Friday's game open with a two-run bomb in the fifth. The shot gave Barbato all the help she needed. The Lafayette native, pitching just her second game since injuring her shoulder Feb. 24, allowed just five UNLV hits and one earned run. Not only did she give fellow hurler Melissa Coronado some rest, as Coronado threw both Thursday games, Barbato also showed herself a little something. “I just went out there and told myself I knew how to pitch,” said Barbato, who improved to 27-3 in her three-year Lady Cajun career. “It didn't matter that I hadn't thrown in a while. I trusted the pitches and my abilities. It was nice to finally get back out there.” The outing was made a little more special for Barbato considering her year. She missed much of the fall practice season due to an injured back, and did not start throwing again until one week before the season-opener. Barbato did tally two wins at the MSU Cowgirl Classic but injured her shoulder against Centenary last month. She would have pitched at last week's tournament in Oklahoma, but then got sick. “Who likes sitting the bench?,” Barbato said. “It has been hard to have to sit there and watch Melissa throw so much and not be able to do anything about it. It was just nice to help this team on the field.” The Lady Cajuns jumped ahead in the first when Addison ripped a double to right-center to plate Jerie Alexander. After UNLV tied it in its half of the frame, Addison got the Lady Cajuns back ahead on a third-inning sacrifice fly. The Gonzales product came through again with a two-run shot in the fifththat curved just around the foul pole – her team-best sixth shot of 2001. Missy Martin provided an RBI single in the seventh, as Louisiana-Lafayette put up two insurance runs in the seventh. Addison's RBI tally was the fourth time this season she has driven in at least four runs. Alexander, meanwhile, crossed the plate three times.
