CAJUNS STUMBLE AT ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM...Sept. 30, 2000
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Alabama-Birmingham jumped out to a 37-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back again in routing Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns 47-2 at Legion Field on Saturday.
The Blazers (3-1) scored points on each of their first six possessions and added a 15-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown on the way to win. It was the fourth special teams touchdown allowed by the Cajuns this season.
Louisiana-Lafayette's only points of the game came when Robert Davis blocked the PAT attempt of Rhett Gallego and Charles Tillman picked up the loose ball and ran it back for a defensive PAT.
That would be the only offense the Cajuns would muster for the rest of the day, as Louisiana-Lafayette managed 11 punts and a fumble on their first 12 offensive possessions.
UAB limited Louisiana-Lafayette to only 91 yards of total offense, including -27 yards on the ground, the lowest offensive output by a Cajun squad since Oklahoma State held the Cajuns to 61 rushing yards in the 1999 season opener for both teams.
Jegil Dugger led UAB with 153 yards on 21 carries and scored on a 14-yard touchdown run, which ultimately led to the blocked PAT and defensive points for the Cajuns. Seven different UAB backs rushed for positive yards in the game, as the Blazers rolled to 290 yards on the ground.
Cory Conley, Bernard Anderson and Thomas Cox also added rushing scores.
On special teams, Gallego was 4-for-4 on his field goal attempts, which included a season-long 47-yarder for the game's first points.
Cajun quarterback Jon Van Cleave threw for 108 yards on 13-of-32 passing with freshman receiver Frederick Stamps topping all Cajuns with a single-game high four catches for 26 yards. Tailback Trikeith Miller led the Cajuns led with 32 receiving yards, thanks in part to a 17-yard reception from Van Cleave late in the game.
