LATE BLOCKED PAT LIFTS TULANE PAST CAJUNS ... Oct. 7, 2000

LAFAYETTE, La. – Tulane's Roxie Shelvin blocked a late PAT attempt by Louisiana-Lafayette to turn what appeared certain to be a tie into a 38-37 lead for the Green Wave, who would maintain that score over the Cajuns in posting its third straight win at Cajun Field on Saturday.

After Brant Hocke gave the Green Wave a 38-31 lead with 8:29 remaining in the game on a two-yard plunge on fourth-and-one, Louisiana-Lafayette marched 86 yards in nine plays and seemed ready to tie the game after Jerome Coleman's two-yard touchdown run with 3:44 left.

However Shelvin burst through the middle of the line and blocked the PAT attempt by Cajun kicker Brent Bergeron to damper the spirits of a season-high 20,113 fans at Cajun Field.

Tulane took over on its next possession and was forced to punt, but not after taking nearly three minutes off the clock.

Louisiana-Lafayette started on its 20-yard line with only 57 seconds remaining and advanced to the Tulane 48, but Cajun quarterback Jon Van Cleave was called for intentional grounding to push Louisiana-Lafayette back and his eventual Hail Mary at the horn was intercepted by Sam Knight to end the game.

Tulane (3-2) had jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter before the Cajuns rallied to tie the score at 24 on Andre George's 76-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Jon Van Cleave in the third quarter.

Neither team had scored more than 30 points entering Saturday's game, but the two squads combined to put on an offensive show, accounting for more than 1,000 yards of total offense together.

Tulane quarterback Patrick Ramsey was the leading offensive star, throwing for 403 yards on 31-of-46 passing with two touchdowns. Wide receiver Adrian Burnette hauled in 11 passes for 191 yards to tie for the seventh-highest yardage total in school history and gave the Green Wave a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a 40-yard strike from Ramsey.

Kerwin Cook also posted eight catches for 103 yards through the air.

But the Cajuns weren't without their own offensive stars. Van Cleave threw for a career-best 282 yards, the highest passing total by a Cajun signal-caller since Jake Delhomme threw for 319 yards against Northern Illinois during the 1996 season. In addition, the Arlington, Texas, native connected with George on a 76-yard touchdown strike that tied the game at 24-24 in the third quarter.

George also teamed with Marcus Wilridge – who posted 104 receiving yards – to become the first Cajun tandem since Donald Richard and Brandon Stokley in 1996 to post triple digits in a single game.
