CAJUN NEWCOMERS CHECK IN .... August 6, 2000
LAFAYETTE Summer break officially ended on Sunday for more than 30 newcomers to Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun football program as the Cajuns and second-year head coach Jerry Baldwin welcomed the group during check in.
The group checked in to their rooms at the Louisiana-Lafayette Conference Center by 3 p.m. and, after an early dinner, received their physicals and equipment later in the evening at the Cajun Athletic Complex. From there, the newcomers closed out the day in a meeting with Baldwin, who said he was ready to hit the field early Monday morning.
"I'm excited and I just can't wait. There's a lot of excitement in these coaches," he said. "We've anxiously been awaiting the first day of practice to go out and really see these kids in action and what they can do."
A total of 33 players reported to camp on Sunday with the group being broken down into 21 freshmen, 11 sophomores and one junior college transfer.
"They are a tremendous group," Baldwin said. "This is a talented group of players who are anxious to become part of a college football team, and you can see that."
The day begins early Monday with a 6:30 a.m. breakfast, followed by conditioning tests, position meetings and a one-hour non-contact practice, starting at 9 a.m. From there, the team will eat lunch and rest before returning later in the afternoon for more meetings and conditioning tests as well as a one-hour, 15-minute practice beginning at 4 p.m.
The non-contact drills, to be held on Monday and Tuesday, are required under NCAA regulations before the varsity players return Wednesday.
After the varsity players return, the team will work through Fan Day on Thursday evening at Cajun Field before hitting practice at full speed on Friday with the start of two-a-day practices.
