Sheffield was a middle distance runner on the 1948-1950 track teams. He was a Gulf States Conference mile run champion each of those years. He competed successfully in the 880-yard run and on the mile relay as well and ran all three events in most track meets. Along with Dr. David Fisher, Sheffield was co-captain of the 1948-1950 teams. His participation in track ended in 1950 when he entered military service.
