A record-setting defensive back as well as a kickoff and punt return specialist for USL, McDonald was a two-time All-Gulf State Conference pick and earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1968 and 1970.
During his career, McDonald set virtually every school record for interceptions, including most in a game (4), in a season (9) and career (21).
McDonald still ranks among the state's all-time leaders in interceptions. He also set the USL record with a 100-yard kickoff return against Pensacola Navy as a freshman in 1968.
As a junior, McDonald helped the Ragin' Cajuns to the 1970 GSC title and a berth in the Grantland Rice Bowl. He was named the GSC's "Defensive Player of the Year," as he led the Cajuns to a 9-3 record.
