LAFAYETTE, La. – A goal off of a corner kick in the 106th minute of the game propelled Southeastern Louisiana past the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday evening, at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer Facility. It was the Cajuns' second straight overtime game and pushed them to 0-2-1 on the season.
Tina Sanchez netted her first goal as a member of the Ragin' Cajuns in the 14th minute, but Southeastern would get an equalizer five minutes later to make it 1-1. The score remained knotted for almost 90 minutes, before the overtime tally ended it in favor of Southeastern.
"The girls played hard," head coach Scot Wieland said. "The second half and overtimes we controlled a lot of the possession again. In overtime corner kicks and set pieces can happen and the ball went their way. We out shot them 21-10, that is a step in the right direction, offensively."
For the second straight game the Cajuns scored in the first 15 minutes. Sanchez was the benefactor of a great crossing pass by Yazmin Montoya. Shelby Isley redirected the cross to Sanchez, who booted it home.
"That was what we worked on," Wieland said about the goal. "Get the ball, attack the end line and make runners on the far side. [Montoya] played a perfect ball to the far post and that's exactly how you plan it. A perfect goal."
Katie Noonan evened it up for Southeastern just minutes later. She picked up a pass from Casey Peacock after a forward a pass from Brianna Singh and found the back of the net without taking a dribble.
The Cajuns would hold a large advantage from then on, outshooting Southeastern 21-10, with a 12-7 lead in shots on target. They forced Southeastern keeper Hope Sabadash to make 11 saves in the game, putting the most shots on goal of the season.
Southeastern would find a way to end the game with just four minutes remaining in overtime. Alexsis Cable sent the ball across on a corner kick, and Kelsey Salcido volleyed it past the Cajuns goalkeeper Kendall Graham for the win.
Montoya would lead the Cajuns with six shots, and picked up her first career point. For Isley, it was her 27th career point, moving her in a tie with Ashley Delahoussaye for sixth place all-time at Louisiana. She now has three points on the season.
"To lose in overtime, it's painful," Wieland said. "Now we have to tell these girls, as young as they are, and a young season, that regardless of the result, they have to focus on the improvements we made."
Graham was handed the loss in goal for the Cajuns, making five saves in the process. She is now 0-2-1 on the season. She has made 13 saves in 262 minutes and holds a 1.72 goals against average.
The Cajuns will return to the pitch on Friday when they take on Southern University at 7:00 p.m. The game will mark game three of their current five-game homestand. They will continue the homestand on Sunday when they take on Northwestern State and then a week from Friday when they take on Louisiana Tech.
