LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 tie with Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon at a rainy Cajun Soccer Complex.  It was the home opener for the Cajuns, who are now 0-1-1 in the new campaign.

"Overall, we really improved today as a team," head coach Scot Wieland said.  "Our possession was a lot better, we created a lot of good opportunities and we had several game-winning opportunities.  It was a great step in the right direction because we proved that this young group is coming together.

Shelby Isley got the scoring started for the Cajuns in the 15th minute.  She slid the ball past the Jacksonville State keeper after a great set-up pass from freshman Annika Schmidt.  Schmidt thread the ball through the defenders inside the box and Isley picked it up from there to find the back of the net.

"That's exactly what [Isley] did last year," Wieland said of her goal.  "She gets hard-work goals. She is a garbage collector and every team needs one. She does it very well. "

It was Isley's 10th career goal, which moves her into a tie with Stacy Smith and Stephanie Lynch for seventh place all-time at Louisiana.

Cajuns goalkeeper Kendall Graham picked up her first point at Louisiana, making six saves, allowing just one goal in 110 minutes.

The Gamecocks goal came in the 70th minute when Jackie Rush scored off of a corner kick.  Rush found the ball on her feet after a header from Lindsey Jackson and squeezed it past Graham and the post to knot the game at one.

The Cajuns had a few good scoring chances in the waning minutes but could not find the back of the net again.

They held a large advantage in shots, taking 23 to Jacksonville State's 14, and held a very large advantage in the overtime periods, taking seven shots in the extra 20 minutes.

Louisiana got a good showing out of their youth again, with Schmidt leading all players with five shots on goal. Wieland continued to show confidence in his youth as well, leaning on them to step up in important situations in the game.

"[The freshman] showed great maturity, I thought that we dominated the overtimes, both of them from start to finish."  Wieland said of the underclassmen.  "We had three freshmen in our midfield and we controlled the flow and the possession.  That is a good thing considering we had six freshmen on the field to end the game. "

The Cajuns will look to keep their momentum from a strong overtime period on Tuesday, when Southeastern comes to town for the second game of this five-game home stand.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
