LAFAYETTE – Seven different players combined to tally the goals for the Ragin' Cajuns soccer team Friday evening at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility in a 7-0 triumph over Southern.

Louisiana (4-2) dominated the flow of the contest and outshot the Jaguars (0-3) by a 29-2 margin. UL held a 20-0 edge in shots on the way to opening a 4-0 lead by intermission.

Goalkeepers Amanda Moorefield and Cory DeMaro combined for the clean sheet, although Southern didn't present much of a challenge.

“Our objective every game is to get better and progress towards the next outing,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “We saw plenty of great things tonight and, as a result of everyone playing, our girls gained tremendous confidence.

“As a team we were able to work on our possession,” Wieland added. “And we were able to build momentum looking toward Sunday's match at Southeastern. Every match we strive to improve and build momentum as conference play approaches.”

The seven goals scored were the most for UL since registering 10 against Jackson State on Aug. 29, 2003.at the LSU Tiger Classic.

Friday's match marked the first on the pitch between the Cajuns and Jaguars. It marked the final non-conference home match of 2012.

It took a few minutes for the Cajuns to establish a rhythm, but once the scoring started, with an Elizabeth Manuel goal at 7:15, the Cajuns quickly pulled away.

Erin Lynn grabbed hold of a rebound off a shot from Manuel in the 19th minute for the first of three goals over a 12-minute span that staked the Cajuns to a 4-0 advantage.

Freshman Erika Bratschum's first career goal came at 30:27 and capped off the first half barrage.

The Cajuns fired off 20 shots in the opening frame and dominated possession by keeping the Jaguars without a single shot.

Louisiana was content with using the second half to fine tune its possession and work on passing in offensive sets. The second half was scoreless through the first 33 minutes.

The Cajuns pressure gradually wore down the Jaguars and goals from Shelby Isley (78:01), Melissa Minton (84:46) and Maci Andrus (88:53) were added in the final 12 minutes of the contest.

Andrus was the top points producer for the Cajuns, ending the night with four points (1 goal, 2 assists). Five other Cajuns – Isley, Lynn, Manuel, Minton and Bratschun – also had an assist in addition to a goal.

Louisiana collected its second shutout of the season (W, 4-0 vs. Prairie View on Aug. 24) and improved to 3-1 at home in 2012.

The Cajuns' next three matches are on the road. First up is a trip to Hammond for a 1 p.m., meeting with Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, Sept. 9. Next weekend, UL is in Cullowhee, N.C., for the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina University for matches against Campbell on Friday, Sept. 14 and Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Sept. 16.

UL's next home match is slated for Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., against North Texas. The match marks the beginning of Sun Belt Conference play.
