LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Sophomore Hayden Gibson notched her fifth goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Ragin' Cajuns soccer team a 1-0 Sun Belt Conference victory over UALR Friday night.
“The girls played extremely hard for ninety minutes, and we came away with a great road win,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “We're really making progress in possessing the ball, and we gained some momentum heading into Jonesboro on Sunday. Hopefully we can pick up two conference road wins before heading home next weekend.”
The Cajuns (7-5-0, 1-1-0 SBC) outshot UALR (1-10-0, 0-3-0 SBC) 13-3 in the second half and 22-10 in the contest. UL also had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield had four saves and earned her fourth shutout of the 2012 season.
“Amanda stepped up big for us again.” Wieland said. “It's always tough to shut out a team on the road, but she continues to step up.”
With less than nine minutes remaining in the contest Melissa Minton and Hayden Gibson played a short corner kick to give the Ragin' Cajuns the game-winning goal as Gibson rocketed a straightaway shot into the top right corner past UALR keeper Shantel Wittke.
Louisiana will travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Arkansas State.
After the match against the Red Wolves, the Ragin' Cajuns return to the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility as they host Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee in two Sun Belt Conference games next weekend.
