UL Soccer Finishes with 1-1 Draw Against Western Kentucky

LAFAYETTE, La. – UL freshman Elizabeth Manuel scored in the 32nd minute to put the Ragin' Cajun soccer team ahead of Western Kentucky Friday night, but the Hilltoppers scored late in regulation to send the match into overtime, resulting in a 1-1 tie after two periods of overtime.

“I'm really proud with how our team played tonight,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “The girls gave 110% for 110 minutes and really fought hard. I think this game gave them some confidence heading into another tough conference match Sunday. If we give the same effort we gave tonight, I like our chances.”

Louisiana (7-6-1, 1-2-1 SBC) was outshot 11-21 in the match by Western Kentucky (8-4-1, 3-1-1 SBC). The Hilltoppers also held an 8-1 advantage in corners.

UL ended a scoreless tie in the 32nd minute when Manuel settled a long pass, dribbled up the right wing past the WKU defenders and slotted the ball past Western Kentucky keeper Nikki Hall.

A couple of great defensive plays by UL kept the Hilltoppers from scoring early. The best opportunity for WKU came when keeper Amanda Moorefield came out of goal and Christen Sims put a shot on target but UL defenders raced in to save the goal. Early in the second half, the Hilltoppers had another opportunity but Moorefield made a tremendous save to maintain the Cajun lead.

With just four minutes remaining in regulation, the Hilltoppers got the equalizer after Amanda Buechel controlled a punched ball by Moorefield and found the back of the net.

In the overtime periods, the Cajuns got two shots off but were unable to get the winning goal, resulting in their first tie of the season.

Moorefield recorded 11 saves on the night, bringing her total to 60 on the season.

UL returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Middle Tennessee, who is undefeated in Sun Belt action, comes to town for a match at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
