LAFAYETTE
– Sophomore All-American candidate Brooke Mitchell threw
two complete games and struck out 22 batters as No. 20
Louisiana-Lafayette posted a 4-1, 5-0 sweep of Nicholls
State here Wednesday evening at Lady Cajun Park in
college softball action.
Mitchell's battery mate, sophomore catcher Joy Webre, carried the offensive load for the Cajuns (30-5) as she hit two home runs (one in each game) in the twinbill while bringing home five of the Cajuns nine runs. She went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and two runs scored.
Mitchell fanned double-digit batters in each ends of the doubleheader and scattered eight hits over the 14 innings. She would issue only three free passes and collected her fifth solo shutout of the season.
She struck out 10 in game one – the fourth of which was the 300th of her brief collegiate career. In game two the Pasadena, Texas, native mowed down 12 batters as she picked up two wins improving her season record to 14-4. She increased her season strikeout total to 154.
Both of Webre's home runs came at crucial stages of each game and allowed the Cajuns to move on to victory.
In
game one, UL Lafayette led 2-1 through 5 ˝ innings
before Webre lifted a home run over the wall in center
field to increase the Cajuns lead to 4-1.
In game two, her second home run of the day and eighth of the season came in the fifth inning of a 1-0 pitcher's duel between Mitchell and Nicholls State starter Dione Meier. Webre's home run pushed the Cajuns lead to 3-0.
Junior shortstop Jill Robertson capped off the scoring in the second game with a two-run bomb to left center field in the sixth inning to put the Cajuns up 5-0.
With the sweep, Louisiana-Lafayette extended its overall winning streak to 15 games and has not lost a game since a 1-0 loss to then-No. 6 Oklahoma on March 14 at the KIA Klassic. The Ragin' Cajuns home win streak moved to 22 and the Cajuns improved to 25-1 in their friendly confines this season.
UL Lafayette completed the season sweep of NSU and increased its win streak over the Colonels to 19 straight games. In four meetings this season Mitchell tossed 25 1/3 innings against NSU and fanned 46 batters while allowing just 11 hits.
UL Lafayette improved to 12-0 against Louisiana teams this season. It was the Cajuns 14th straight doubleheader sweep.
Senior All-American Becky McMurtry was 0-for-4 in the twinbill as she saw her season-high and career-high 15-game hitting streak brought to an end after a 0-for-3 performance in game one. She was walked once and hit by a pitch twice in game two.
True
freshman and Metairie native Danyele Gomez hit a solo
home run in the third inning of game one as she
increased her season home run total to 15 (freshman
school record) and RBI total to 43. Gomez is now just
one home run away from tying former All-American Alana Addison's single-season home run record of 16 set last
season.
For Nicholls State (21-21), Stephanie Sasser was 2-for-3 in game one with the lone Colonels run scored in the twinbill.
Sasser scored on an RBI double to dead center field by Kristi Blanchard in the top of the sixth. Sasser had led off the inning with a double to left center field.
Both Sasser and Sarah Eads had two hits for NSU in the doubleheader. Eads was 2-for-3 in game two.
In the circle both Nichole Wagner and Meier suffered losses for the Colonels.
Wagner (4-11) took the loss in game one after she allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (two home runs) in game one.
Meier (11-8) allowed five runs off of five hits (two home runs) and struck out seven in game two.
Louisiana-Lafayette will wrap up its current 16-game homestand and its 2003 home schedule on Thursday in a 7 p.m. single game with Texas-San Antonio. Then it's off to Miami for a Sun Belt Conference showdown with Florida International.
