John "Skipper" Hunt was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection for the Cajuns tennis team from 1973-75 and was the first tennis player to be inducted into the USL Athletic Hall of Fame. During his three-year career at USL, he was the fastest to reach the 100-win total, finishing with a combined total of 138 singles and doubles wins - then a school record.
He was an SLC finalist in 1973 and a semifinalist in 1974 and reached the league's quarterfinals in 1975 in singles. He teamed with Carter Lomax to capture the SLC doubles title in 1975, recording an impressive 26-3 record. He played in the No. 1 singles position for two years and compiled records of 45-14 in 1973, 41 wins in 1974 and posted a 52-9 record in 1975.
After a 35-year career in law enforcement, Hunt retired from the Texas Highway Patrol as a lieutenant in 2010 and currently lives in San Angelo, Texas.
