Cajuns look for first SBC title since 1998

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team will look for its first conference title in 20 years when it heads west to San Marcos, Texas to compete in the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships at Bobcat Track and Field Stadium.
 
Action begins on Friday at 9 a.m., with the men's decathlon followed by the opening day of the women's heptathlon at 9:30. Field action will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the women's hammer throw before preliminary running events begin at 7:10 p.m.
 
Action on Saturday begins at 9 a.m., with the completion of both the decathlon and heptathlon before field events begin at noon and running events at 6:30 p.m. The final day of competition begins on Sunday with field events at 11 a.m., before running events start at 5 p.m.

In last year's SBC Outdoor meet in Arlington, Texas, Louisiana posted its best finish on the men's side since 2012 finishing in a third-place tie with 98 points. Bartul Basic, currently ranked No. 10 in the nation in the men's javelin, earned his second straight SBC title in the event for Louisiana with a throw of 223-8.
 
Senior Beau Robinson enters the meet ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:08.86) with Stanley Limoh ranked fourth in the men's 800-meter run (1:52.88). Newcomer Sven Glueck will look to contend in a pair of events for the Ragin" Cajuns as he is ranked second in the decathlon (6,637 points) and third in the high jump (6-9 ½). Hunter Stelly joins Basic in the men's javelin title contention after posting a throw of 211-9 last month at the Bobcat Invitational.
 
Angus Sinclair, the 2016 runner-up in the decathlon, is ranked fifth in the SBC in the high jump (6-8 ¾) with newcomer Shaquille Singuineau ranked third in the shot put (56-0 ½) and Kyle Baudoin fourth in the pole vault (16-11 ½).
 
Freshman MacKenzie Marze will look to claim the SBC title in the women's javelin after her mark of 150-11 at the Louisiana Classics was the third-best throw in the conference this spring. Tisay Woodhouse, the school-record holder in the women's hammer throw, enters the SBC Outdoor ranked No. 7 at 178-7 while Taylor Walker is ranked sixth in the triple jump (40-3 ¼).
 
Claire Hodges, the school-record holder in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:49.24), and Lindsay LaGarde will look to finish in the top eight in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hodges enters the meet ranked No. 6 in the SBC this season (11:05.97) while LaGarde, who posted the third-fastest time (11:18.42) in the event last month, is ranked 10th.
 
Alex Morrow, ranked No. 4 in the women's heptathlon, scored a personal-best 4,674 points earlier at the Bobcat Invitational with redshirt freshman Victoria Wayne ranked No. 7 in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:02.91).
 
Louisiana, which won eight straight SBC titles between 1991-98, last claimed the SBC Outdoor men's title in 1998 when it scored 173 points on its home track. The women's team claimed SBC titles in 1993 and 1997 and will look to improve on last year's 11th-place finish.

RAGIN' CAJUNS STORYLINES

• Louisiana has recorded nine team titles all-time at the SBC Outdoor meet in the program's history, including seven by the men's team and two (1993 & 1997) by the women's team.

• Nine student-athletes (Bartul Basic, D'Sharee Collins, Dajah Guidry, Alena Hrusoci, Lindsay LaGarde, Alex Morrow, Beau Robinson, Hannah Siegmund and Angus Sinclair) were awarded their diplomas during a special Spring Commencement ceremony on Tuesday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track Facility. The Spring 2018 Commencement ceremony will take place on Friday at the Cajundome and Cajundome Convention Center.

• Bartul Basic looks to earn his third straight Sun Belt Conference title in the men's javelin after posting a winning throw (217-10) in 2016 in Lafayette and 2017 in Arlington (223-8).

• Alena Hrusoci returns to the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships after missing the entire 2017 season to an injury. In the 2016 SBC Championships in Lafayette, Hrusoci established a school and SBC Championship record (57.74) in the women's 400-meter hurdles.

• Kyle Baudoin looks for his first top-3 finish in the men's pole vault at the SBC Outdoors after posting three top-3 finishes during SBC indoor competition. Baudoin finished eighth as a freshman in 2016 before finishing fourth last season at the SBC Outdoors in Arlington.
