SAN MARCOS, Texas – A 2-3-4 finish in the men's javelin propelled the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team after the first day of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Bobcat Track and Field Stadium.

Louisiana, which scored 19 points to finish in second place after three events on the men's side, placed three athletes in the top seven after the first day of the decathlon with Juliette Smith and Alex Morrow in the top-six in the women's heptathlon.

Action on Saturday begins at 9 a.m., with the completion of both the decathlon and heptathlon before field events begin at noon and running events at 6:30 p.m. The final day of competition begins on Sunday with field events at 11 a.m., before running events start at 5 p.m.

Live results for the three-day meet will be available at RaginCajuns.com.

Bartul Basic, the 2016 and 2017 SBC men's javelin champion, fell short for a third straight title after finishing second overall for Louisiana with a throw of 216 feet, 4 inches. The Ragin' Cajuns received points from Sean Bouzigard, whose personal-best toss of 197-8 was good for third with Hunter Stelly finishing fourth at 196-1.

Sven Glueck paced three Louisiana athletes in the decathlon after scoring 3,712 points to finish in third after the first five events. The German opened the day with a personal-best in the 100-meters (11.36) before finishing third in both the long jump (22-5) and high jump (6-8).

Freshman Chandler Mixon used first-place finishes in both the 100-meters (11.03) and 400-meters (personal-best 49.98) to finish the first day in fifth-place for Louisiana with 3,638 points with 2016 decathlon runner-up Angus Sinclair in seventh place (3,565).

Smith and Morrow, who each capped off the day with personal-bests in the women's 200-meters, finished the first four events of the eight-event discipline in fifth and sixth place respectively. Smith, who scored 3,023 points, captured the shot put with a throw of 39-10 before clocking a time of 25.59 in the 200 to finish fifth in the event.

Morrow, who recorded 2,868 points, placed third overall in the high jump (5-1 ¾) for the Ragin' Cajuns before ending the day with a time of 26.03 in the 200.

Alena Hrusoci, competing in the SBC Outdoor for the first time since 2016 when she established a school and SBC-record (57.74) in the women's 400-meter hurdles, qualified for the finals in the event after clocking a time of 1:01.50 to post the fourth-fastest time. Jonathan Kimutai, competing in the men's 1,500-meters, qualified for Sunday's final after recording a time of 4:02.50.
