Louisiana Outlasts McNeese To Claim Season Series With 12-10 Victory

4/11/2018 12:04:00 AM | Baseball

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team picked up a 12-10 victory over McNeese on Tuesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park to complete the series sweep of the Cowboys.

The Ragin' Cajuns (16-17) were outhit 15-9 in the contest by McNeese (13-20) but drew a season-best 10 walks.

Louisiana was strong defensively as the squad turned the first triple play since March 3, 2010 in the contest in the top of the seventh inning.

Junior Grant Cox was the beneficiary of the triple play claiming his first career victory for the Cajuns limiting the Cowboys to one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Freshman Michael Leaumont recorded his first career save tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to close out the contest.

Austin Briggs was handed the loss for McNeese after surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.

LEADING THE CAJUNS

Senior Kennon Fontenot led the Cajuns at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Fontenot increased his on-base streak to 13 games, while senior Zach LaFleur had a career-high four RBI going 2-for-5 and scored a run.

The Ragin' Cajuns swiped nine bases in the game led by freshman Hayden Cantrelle who had three which is the most by a player since Ishmael Edwards stole three against Sacred Heart on March 6, 2016.

On the mound, junior Hogan Harris notched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in a short start for Louisiana.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cajuns jumped out to 7-2 lead after four innings as Louisiana plated three runs in both the first and third innings.

The early lead would not hold up though as McNeese rallied for seven runs on six hits and a walk in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-7 edge. A three-run homer down the right field line by Jake Cochran capped the scoring in the inning to give the Cowboys the lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns responded in the bottom half of the sixth with a five-run inning to regain the lead 12-9. After Cantrelle scored on an RBI single up the middle by Fontenot, LaFleur plated Hunter Kasuls on an infield single to tie the game at 9-all. Fontenot gave Louisiana a 10-9 lead when he came home on a double steal with runners on the corners. The Cajuns picked up the final two runs of the inning on an RBI single by Todd Lott and a throwing error by McNeese third baseman Carson Maxwell.

In the top of the seventh, the Cowboys put runners on first and second with no outs before Brett Whelton lined a ball to Kasuls at second base who started the triple play tossing the ball to Cantrelle at second base who completed the play with a throw to Tyler Stover at first to end the inning.

McNeese narrowed the lead to 12-10 in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI double to right center by Reid Bourque.

The Cowboys threatened again in the top of the ninth putting runners on the corners with one out, but Leaumont settled in and struck out both Whelton and Cochran looking to end the game.

UP NEXT

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana to close out their five-game homestand. Following the matchup with the Lions, Louisiana will head back on the road with a three-game series at Appalachian State starting Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
