20th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns Get All-Around Effort in Sweep of App State

3/17/2018 9:18:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball captured a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Appalachian State on Saturday at Lamson Park.

With wins of 5-0 and 8-0 (5 inn.), Louisiana (17-6, 4-1 Sun Belt) claimed the series victory from the Mountaineers (12-13, 2-3 Sun Belt) ahead of Sunday's 11 a.m. series finale.

The Ragin' Cajuns rode the surge of a four-run first inning and received five innings of no-hit softball from Summer Ellyson in capturing Game 1.

Louisiana put Appalachian State away early in the nightcap by scoring single runs in the first two at bats, then plating five runs in the third inning capped off by a three-run homer from Alissa Dalton.

It was the second and third shutouts of the week for the Ragin' Cajuns pitching staff. Adding in the shutout of FIU on Thursday, the staff has tossed 19 scoreless innings on the current four-game homestand.

Louisiana picked up its 39th consecutive Sun Belt Conference series victory dating back to March 2013.

THE BASICS OF GAME 1
Kara Gremillion led the charge at the plate going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI. Alissa Dalton (2-for-3) and Kourtney Gremillion (2-for-2, 1 RBI) also turned in multiple-hit games.

Ellyson (5.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 K) faced one over the minimum in guiding the Ragin' Cajuns no-hit bid which would extend into the sixth inning. Carrie Boswell picked up three strikeouts in her two innings of relief.

Aeriyl Mass (single), Brittany Rodriguez (walk) and Dalton (single) all reached base in succession to start the bottom of the first inning. Kara Gremillion followed with a single down the right field line to open the scoring.

A double steal and RBI singles from Kynadi Tipler and Kourtney Gremillion – all with two outs – stretched the lead to 4-0. The final tally came on Kara Gremillion's first homer of the season in the third inning.

The Mountaineers were unable to advance a runner past second base the entire contest.

THE BASICS OF GAME 2
Dalton picked up her second multiple-hit game of the day with a 2-for-3 showing and powered the Louisiana offense with her season-high of four RBI.

Casey Dixon hurled five shutout innings with four strikeouts. Like Ellyson and Boswell, she did not allow a single App State runner past second base.

Louisiana got the leadoff hitter aboard in the first two innings and it resulted in a single run each time for a quick 2-0 lead.

Casidy Chaumont upped the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, then the Cajuns continued fortune in two-out hitting kicked in. Pinch hitter Caitlin Garcia provided an RBI single, then Kalyn Watts followed with the first of her two hits off the bench to bring up Dalton who skied the ball over the right field wall extending the lead to 7-0.

The Ragin' Cajuns locked up their first run rule win of SBC play in the fifth inning as Kell Martinez reached on an error and advanced to second and scored on the very next pitch when Watts doubled into right center.

NOTEWORTHY
- Louisiana's leadoff batter reached base eight out of 11 at bats, including all five at bats in Game 2.
- The Ragin' Cajuns were 8-for-17 (.471) in two-out situations, capped off by a 5-for-9 performance in Game 2. Alissa Dalton picked up a run-scoring hit in both of her two-out plate appearances in the nightcap.
- Louisiana posted double digit hits in both contests, totaling 21 on the day. Eleven different hitters contributed at least one base hit. Kourtney Gremillion (4-for-4) and Alissa Dalton (4-for-6) led the way with four hits.

- Casey Dixon recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career.
- Summer Ellyson delivered her second outing of no-hit softball (tossed no-hitter vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 22).
