Ragin’ Cajuns Baseball Falls To Georgia Southern In SBC Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Starter Nick Lee was handed his first loss of the year for the Ragin' Cajuns (7-10, 0-1 SBC) after giving up three runs on a hit, four walks and three hit batters in 3.0 innings of work.
Brian Eichhorn claimed the victory for the Eagles (8-10, 1-0 SBC) going 7.0 innings with three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Closer Chase Cohen registered his third save of the year tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
LEADING THE CAJUNS
Daniel Lahare and Hayden Cantrelle each had a pair of hits in the game as Louisiana outhit Georgia Southern 6-4. Both Lahare and Cantrelle reached base three times in the game with Cantrelle scoring twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Jonathan Windham brought home Cantrelle on a safety squeeze.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to left field by Steven Curry to even the game at 1-all. Later in the inning, Christian Avant scored on a wild pitch by Lee to give Georgia Southern a 2-1 edge. Mason McWhorter drove in the final run of the inning with a two-out RBI single to centerfield to make the score 3-1.
The Ragin' Cajuns cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth as Lahare scored all the way from first base on a throwing error by GS third baseman Jeddediah Fagg.
Georgia Southern added to its advantage in the bottom half of the fifth on a pair of RBI singles by Noah Searcy and Jason Swan to take a 5-2 lead.
Cantrelle scored for the second time in the game in the top of the sixth on a throwing error by catcher Matt Anderson to pull within two runs at 5-3, but that's a close as Louisiana would get as the Eagles tacked on the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 6-3.
UP NEXT
The Cajuns and Eagles return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT for game two of the series. Sophomore right-hander Jack Burk will make the start for Louisiana, while Georgia Southern will counter with sophomore right-hander Seth Shuman. Fans can listen to the contest on KPEL 96.5-FM with Ian Auzenne and Jeff Schneider on the call.
