Ellyson's Shutout Highlights 20th-Ranked Louisiana's Return to Lamson Park

3/15/2018 9:41:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball kicked off a four-game stretch at Lamson Park with a 2-0 win on Thursday over former Sun Belt rival FIU.

Summer Ellyson struck out eight in posting a four-hit shutout of the visiting Panthers. It was her second shutout of the season and the pitching staff's third.

Louisiana (15-6) loaded the bases in the second inning leading the game-winning tally. Kynadi Tipler's leadoff double in the fourth inning led to an insurance run being pushed across.

Ellyson turned away the lone two scoring threats from FIU (14-16): a one-out triple in the third inning and runners and second and third with no outs in the seventh.

The Ragin' Cajuns and Panthers, meeting for the 58th time overall, met for the first time since the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Ellyson retired the first six FIU batters she faced and wound up facing the minimum in an inning four times. The third inning and seventh inning threats were only times a Panthers runner reached second base.

Tipler finished 3-for-3 at the plate, giving her a season-high in hits.

Kelli Martinez and Brittany Rodriguez drove home the runs for the Ragin' Cajuns.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After getting three baserunners in the first inning, the Ragin' Cajuns continued to put pressure on FIU in the second inning.

After a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Casidy Chaumont, Tipler singled in the hole at short and Martinez laid down a one-out bunt single to load the bases. Louisiana grabbed a 1-0 lead when Rodriguez pushed the ball to shortstop.

The Panthers had a runner on third base with an opportunity to answer in the top of the third inning following a one-out triple by Venessa Gallegos. Ellyson fanned the next two hitters to strand Gallegos.

Tipler led off the fourth inning with her double, moved to third on an Aeriyl Mass sacrifice bunt and crossed home on a Martinez bouncer to second base to make it 2-0.

FIU made a push in the seventh inning as Natalie Orcutt singled to lead off and Kasandra Castle doubled. Ellyson stood her ground and preserved the shutout as she promptly retired the next three Panthers.
