LAFAYETTE – After winning a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team (10-5) makes one last stop before returning home, when they'll take on the No. 69 Houston Cougars on Monday, Mar. 12, with the match scheduled for 11 a.m.
CAJUNS DOMINATE THE LADY PANTHERS: Louisiana went to Prairie View, Texas and swept a doubleheader against the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers without dropping a point. They won both matches with a score of 4-0, and they only dropped one match, a doubles match in the second half of the twin bill, but they took that doubles point.
          Â
Senior Elena Sava clinched the first match, with a straight set win at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia locked things up in the second match. Senior Kelly Drew won both of her matches at No. 1 to have a solid day in singles. Drew and Garcia also won both of their doubles matches on the day to give Drew three wins combined on the day.Â
DREW IS ROLLING: Drew has won five straight matches, including taking down South Alabama's Alexandria Stiteler, then ranked No. 90 in the nation, on Mar. 1. She's won all of her matches playing No. 1 singles and she's been a cornerstone of the Cajuns success this season with her record in singles sitting at 8-3.
WHAT THE COUGARS BRING: Houston enters the match ranked No. 69 in the nation and they're sitting at 12-1 in the season. They're undefeated at home (8-0) and they're ridding a four-match winning streak. Their lone loss came at Rice on Feb. 17, and that snapped an eight-match winning streak that Houston started the season with.
          Â
The Cougars bring in a ranked doubles duo, with the pairing of Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari carry a national ranking of No. 65 into the match with the Cajuns.
          Â
This is the first time the Cajuns and the Cougars have faced off in 13 seasons, and Houston has won the last three matches. The last time the Cajuns beat Houston was on Feb. 18, 1995 and that was the tail end of the Cajuns only two wins against Houston in school history.
