Cajuns Take Down UNO For Second Straight Road Win

3/11/2018 11:48:00 PM | Men's Tennis

NEW ORLEANS – With his third straight singles win junior Arthur Libaud clinched the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team's 5-2 win over the New Orleans Privateers Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

The win was the second straight win of the weekend for the Cajuns, with Louisiana having won on Saturday, Mar. 10, at Southern Miss and the Cajuns record improves to 13-8.

Libaud clinched things at No. 4 with a straight set win and he was joined by sophomores Jamie Fraser, Pearse Dolan and Elio Lago in snagging singles wins.  Dolan and freshman Pierce Gilheany won their fourth straight doubles match together to clinch the doubles point.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Fraser and Libaud, playing No. 3 doubles, got the Cajuns off on the winning foot taking their match against UNO's Kramer and Adoncecchi without dropping a point, 6-0.  Dolan and Gilheany then gave the Cajuns a 1-0 lead, locking up the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over the Privateers' Guedy and Klein.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Fraser quickly gave the Cajuns a 2-0 lead when he took down, in straight sets, UNO's Giacomo Adoncecchi, 6-1, 6-0.  The Privateers then snagged their first win of the day, when at No. 3 Alexis Guedy beat Louisiana senior Vlad Kramarov, 6-2, 6-3, to put the score at 2-1.

But the Cajuns dug in, not letting the Privateers to get any closer to their lead, and Louisiana would take the next two matches to lock up the win.

Dolan got the Cajuns one win closer when he took down UNO's Lorenzo Camilli in straight sets at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.  Shortly after that, Libaud locked up the victory for the Cajuns with his own straight set win over UNO's Nicolas Kramer, 6-3, 7-6.  Libaud had to fight hard through the second set, as things rolled into a tiebreaker, but the Cajuns' junior saw his opportunity to lock up the day for Louisiana and he would take the breaker to clinch the win putting the score at 4-1.

The Privateers would get one more win before the day was over, when at No. 1 Federico Boscarino beat Louisiana freshman Nico Sojka, 6-4, 6-4.  But the final domino on the day fell the Cajuns way when at No. 2 Lago fought hard to get a three-set win over UNO's Klein Johannes, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.  Lago's win gave the Cajuns their 5-2 final score win as they wrapped up the weekend going 2-0.

NOTEWORTHY: Lago's win was his ninth straight win in singles, and his singles record now sits at 12-6; Libaud won his third straight match and his singles record improves to 8-9; Gilheany and Dolan are now 9-1 together in doubles winning their fourth straight match together.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns home to Cajun Courts for a five-match home stand starting with UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday, Mar. 16.  That match, starting at 5:30 p.m., will be the Cajuns Gumbo and Jambalaya Night with the first 50 fans getting a free bowl of either Gumbo or Jambalaya.  Fans are also encouraged to bring canned goods, to donate to the Canned Good Food Drive that the Cajuns are hosting with the help of the Foodnet Food Bank of Lafayette.
