LAFAYETTE – Kelsey Vincent hit a school-record tying three home runs and Lexie Elkins added two of her own while posting a game-high six RBI as No. 7 Louisiana defeated UT Arlington 18-0 (5 inn.) in the opening game of a Sun Belt series at Lamson Park.
Louisiana (18-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) batted around in each of its final three at bats to pull away from UTA (14-11, 0-1 Sun Belt) after a scoreless first inning.
Vincent finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. She became the first player to hit three home runs since Shellie Landry on April 10, 2013 vs. Southern Miss.
"She's a special kid and a pretty good hitter," head coach Michael Lotief said of Vincent. "It's never all clicked for her. In the last couple of weekends she's starting to get a good feeling. She's a very smart hitter who understands the game and what pitchers are trying to do to her."
Elkins generated a 4-for-4 showing by adding a single and RBI double to her two home runs. She launched her first grand slam of the year and set season-highs for hits and RBI.
As a team, the Ragin' Cajuns set a season-high and tied a school record with six home runs.
With the win the Ragin' Cajuns extended their current win streak at Lamson Park to 22 games, dating back to the 2014 Sun Belt Tournament. UL is 15-0 in the friendly confines in 2015.
The Cajuns and Mavericks conclude their Sun Belt series with a 1 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday at Lamson Park. The twinbill is being televised locally on MyKLAF-TV and streamed outside the region on ESPN3.com. The games can also be heard on the radio via SportsRadio ESPN-1420 AM.
Jordan Wallace pitched three hitless innings in combining with Kyle Jo Trahan and Alex Stewart for the team's 12th shutout of the season. Wallace collected career win No. 81, moving within three of Melissa Coronado for fourth place in program history.
Shellie Landry also homered, picking up her team-best 10th blast in the fourth inning. Landry also had a double, increasing her season extra base hits total to 15 (out of 23 total hits).
Louisiana's No. 1-5 hitters (Haley Hayden, Landry, Elkins, Samantha Walsh, Vincent) combined to go 13-for-17 at the plate and combined for 16 RBI.
"You can't take the load and put it on one person, it has to be everybody contributing all the time," Lotief remarked. "That's the mindset we're trying to develop. It happened tonight, now let's see it again."
Vincent's first homer of the night opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. It was the first of five hits in the frame that resulted in a quick six runs for the Cajuns.
DJ Sanders walked, Hayden singled and Landry walked with one out loading the bases in the bottom of the third. Elkins followed with her grand slam to stretch the lead to 10-0. Vincent's second home run of the game capped off the scoring in the inning.
As the Cajuns built an 11-0 lead, Wallace faced just one batter over the minimum in keeping the Mavericks off the scoreboard. The senior hurler struck out five UTA batters.
A one-out, infield single by Nina Villanueva, which forced Hayden to make a diving stop to keep it in the infield, gave the Mavericks their first hit in the fourth inning. Trahan retired Shelbi Sikes and Meagan Michele to retire the side.
A two-run double by Hayden, two-run home run from Landry and Elkins solo home run in succession in the bottom of the fourth made it 16-0. After a Walsh single, Vincent's third home run closed out the scoring.
Sam Montes took the loss for UTA. She surrendered six runs off six hits before being relieved in the third inning.
The shutout marked only the third time in 25 games the Mavericks, who entered the game hitting .367 as a team, were held scoreless.
