SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Ragin' Cajuns golf team found itself in fourth place after a cold first day of the Oak Hills Invitational on Monday shooting a two-round score of 26-over par (594) at Oak Hills Country Club.
"I am proud of the guy's attitude today despite the tough weather," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Besides a few mistakes, I think our guys came with the right approach and really showed some toughness. I know they are ready to get back out here tomorrow and continue to move up the board."
All 15 teams posted scores that were over par with 13th ranked Oklahoma in the lead at 11-over (579) through 36 holes. No. 30 Baylor currently sits in second just one stroke back of the Sooners at 12-over (580). North Texas (+21, 589), Louisiana (+26, 594) and East Carolina (+32, 600) round out the top 5 teams.
Individually, the Sooner's Michael Schoolcraft and Baylor's Kyle Jones were the only two golfers to post scores under par, with the pair tied for the lead at 2-under (140).
Freshman Fernando Cruz Valle is one of three Cajuns in the top 25 after day one as he is in a tie for ninth at 4-over (146). Haraldur Magnus sits one stroke back of Cruz Valle in a tie for 13th carding a score of 5-over (147), and Thomas Strandemo is tied for 20th at 6-over (148).
"All three of those guys played within themselves all day long," Sliman added. "I think all of them learned something about themselves today, and that's got them fired up to get back out on the course tomorrow."
Sophomores Christian Verrougstrate and Ross Davis round out the scoring for Louisiana with Verrougstraete in a tie for 41st with a score of 11-over (153), while Davis shot 16-over (158) through two rounds to end the day in a tie for 73rd.
Tomorrow's tee time has been pushed back to 9:30 a.m. due to weather. The Cajuns will be paired with Oklahoma, Baylor and North Texas for the final round.
"We are right there playing with two great programs in Oklahoma and Baylor," Sliman noted. "We don't need to concern ourselves with who we are playing with. We just need to stick to our process and play within ourselves. Hopefully we have an opportunity tomorrow to apply the lessons that we learned today."
