Game Notes
Setting the Scene: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team will finish up their Alabama trip with the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader at Troy, on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5:15 p.m. The Cajuns are currently riding a two-game Sun Belt winning streak and have already matched their overall and Sun Belt win total from the 2012-13 season. With leading scorer Keke Veal out with an injury, the Cajuns saw Brooklyn Arceneaux step up against South Alabama, scoring a career-high 19 points and Kia Wilridge posted her first career double-double grabbing 11 rebounds with 11 points. Sylvana Okde is the team's leading scorer with Veal out, averaging 11.3 points in 27.8 minutes. The sophomore has had two 20+ point games, scoring 23 against ULM and 20 against UT Arlington.
About the Opponent: Troy comes into the game with an 0-4 conference record and 4-12 record, overall. They opened the season 3-5 before losing 10 of the next 11 games, including a 113-105 overtime loss to Alabama. They are led by all-Sun Belt selection and the conference's leading scorer Joanna Harden with 24.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 36.2 minutes a game. Sophomore Ashley Beverly-Kelly also averages in double-figures with 12.4 points, for the Sun Belt's highest-scoring offense.
Wilridge with the Double-Double: Kia Wilridge picked up her first career double-double against South Alabama, marking the third double-double of the season for the Cajuns. Jasmin Mills had the first two in the first two games of the season, scoring 20 with 11 rebounds against Nebraska Omaha and 16 points with 11 rebounds against SUNO.
Century Mark for Okde: Sophomore guard Sylvana Okde hit 74 3-pointers as a freshman in 2012-13 and has hit 32 so far this season, becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 100 career triples. Two players have reached the 200-mark, with Rhonda McCullough (1987-90) holding the school record with 260, and Kim Perrot (1986-90) with 202. Perrot achieved that feat despite the 3-point shot being nonexistent in her first season with the Ragin' Cajuns. Okde continues to climb the all-time leader board for career three's at Louisiana, and is currently tied with Whitney Dunlap (2006-09/112) for sixth all-time. She is 31 triples shy of tying Onna Charles (2005-08) for fifth all-time at Louisiana.
Chairmen of the (Offensive) Board: The Ragin' Cajuns lead the Sun Belt in offensive rebounds with 16.6 per game, an honor that they came just short of in 2013, finishing second to Middle Tennessee. The Cajuns lead Arkansas State by 1.2 rebounds per game and Troy by 1.4.
Avoiding the Turnover: The Cajuns have forced the most turnovers per game among all Sun Belt teams with 23.5 per game and hold a league-high +6.07 turnover margin. That margin is good enough to rank the Cajuns in the top-25 in the nation.
Shades of 2006-07: The Ragin' Cajuns posted a four-game winning streak beginning with a Dec. 14 victory against New Orleans through the Sun Belt Conference opener at ULM on Jan. 4. The win against ULM marked the longest winning streak and first time the Cajuns have won their conference opener since the 2006-07 season. The Cajuns won seven straight games from Jan. 3-25, 2007, all Sun Belt match ups. The Cajuns earned a bid to the NCAA tournament in 2007, falling to Marquette in the opening round.
Another Time Change: As is expected during season play, the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team has pushed back their game against Western Kentucky from a scheduled 2 p.m. start to a 5 p.m. start at the Cajundome. The move is due to the men's game on the same day being televised on ESPN2
What's Next? The Ragin' Cajuns return to the Cajundome for a pair of Sun Belt contests. They will take on conference newcomer Georgia State on Jan. 23 at 5 p.m and return to take on Western Kentucky at 5 p.m on Jan. 25. Both games are part of a Ragin' Cajuns basketball double-header, with the women playing in the first game against Georgia State and in the second game against Western Kentucky.
